Article Review: Enlightenment as Mass Deception
Consumerism is what modern culture thrives on, it's how we survive in the modern social hierarchy, but what many of us don't realize is that the most unsuspecting pastimes can be molding our very ideologies which feed these monopolies. As the article's title suggests, what was originally meant to enlighten is now widely used to manipulate viewers into dominating ideologies and conformism to support the base of modern culture. One of the greatest forms of enlightenment for the past century has been cinema, though it's original intention has been somewhat tarnished through the greed of monopolistic industries. Technology has more power than we had ever imagined it could, from the telephone to film and now artificial intelligence, but that's for another day. What gives technology such power is not the technology itself, but those who are of the upmost economical position which are the footholds to both the creation and corruption of these innovations. The rationalization of such mind-boggling inventions, in many ways, can be considered extremely dangerous to the human race. As technology expands, it tends to creep into our minds with more forms of social and ideological control through the simplicity of watching a character on screen.
Kantian schematism allows us to understand that our psyche turns what we hear or see into reasonable concepts, especially when that sight or sound is coming from unrealistic fantasies seen on screen. Whether you like it or not, everything we do and say comes from somewhere other than ourselves as nothing is completely original. From the way someone makes their morning coffee to how they motivate (or the latter) themselves throughout the day is all from emulation. As humans it's only natural to have an irresistible urge to imitate, even when we don't notice it ourselves. In many cases, we may begin imitating or following concepts in which we do not originally believe to be right, yet with the lasting impression of a movie, you may unknowingly mirror the dominating ideologies which run thick in modern society. One of the most threatening pieces of technology is how unnoticed the deceit of the industry is, even more so today as watching movies, social media, and the like have become a way of living.
